We've already spoken about how important a cover is for your book, but what about the importance of editing? Nobody wants to read a book with spelling and punctuation mistakes, right?
Any author out there will tell you that editing is one of the most important parts of a book coming together. Self-publishing gives you the freedom to pick from any editor out there to edit your book for you. Good editing won't necessarily increase book sales for you once you release your book, but it's a factor that can be eliminated if your book isn't selling as well as you had hoped.
So what's the job of an editor?
- To fix grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors.
- Makes sure there's not any plot holes, and if there are any, point them out to you.
- Check the pace of the story and give you advice to change words or phrases if they don't suit a character's personality.
- Make sure that the story's ending is suitable and built up enough by the beginning and development of the story.
- Point out any clichés.
- Tell you if something doesn't make sense or read clearly.
- Makes sure that you don't repeat information or change something that you've already mentioned.
As you can see from above, an editor offers a vast amount of help to make your finished book the best it can be. They do so much more too. This means that it's always good to search around and find an editor that matches your budget and comes recommended.
